Unfortunately, Christianity has removed itself from the biblical culture to the point many idioms or cultural expressions are not understood as with this passage. Yeshua is quoting from Proverbs 25:23-29 which are instructions for wisdom concerning deceptive speech, personal slander, and returning a verbal insult when verbally attacked. To “turn the other cheek” is a Hebrew idiom for not returning an insult when one is received, not as many think, that your enemy is allowed to attack you or you family without encountering resistance and self defense. – Source
